WASHINGTON - The Orioles made a flurry of roster moves this afternoon before the opening game of their three-game interleague series against the Nationals.
The promotion of catcher Caleb Joseph from Triple-A Norfolk was known after the club optioned catcher Chance Sisco to the Tides following Sunday's game.
Joseph will be reunited with his brother, Corban Joseph, who joined the Orioles from Double-A Bowie over the weekend. Caleb Joseph is behind the plate and hitting eighth tonight against the Nationals' Jefry Rodriguez, who is making his first major league start and second appearance.
The unexpected move was the selection of infielder Steve Wilkerson's contract from Norfolk, where he'd hit .290/.362/.500 with three home runs and nine RBIs in 16 games after returning from a 50-game suspension for testing positive for an amphetamine. Until the suspension, which was announced in December, Wilkerson was considered a candidate to break camp as a utility infielder out of spring training.
To make room for Wilkerson on the 25- and 40-man rosters, infielder Pedro Ãlvarez was designated for assignment. In his third tour of duty with the Orioles, Ãlvarez hit .180 with eight homers and 18 RBIs in 45 games.
The Josephs are the first set of brothers as teammates since Melvin Upton, Jr. and Justin Upton appeared on the roster together for the 2015 Padres. They're the 28th set of brothers as teammates in the majors since 1980, according to STATS. Cal Ripken, Jr. and Billy Ripken are the only other set of brothers as teammates in Orioles history.
