Young recalled and Poteet placed on injured list (plus notes)

Brandon Young is back in the majors.

The Orioles recalled Young today from Triple-A Norfolk, a move that required a corresponding injury in order to dodge the 15-day minimum rule. Reliever Cody Poteet was placed on the 15-day IL with right shoulder inflammation.

Young made his major league debut Saturday afternoon against the Reds and allowed three runs and seven hits over four innings. The Orioles optioned him the following day and recalled Poteet as a fresh bullpen arm.

Today’s move leaves the Orioles with five starters, which could present another chance for Young this weekend in Detroit. Kyle Gibson made his third start with an affiliate Sunday, joining High-A Aberdeen and throwing 78 pitches in five innings.

Young and Gibson would be available for Friday’s series opener at Comerica Park.

Poteet let an inherited runner score Sunday after replacing Charlie Morton, and he was charged with five runs and six hits and with 68 pitches thrown in 2 2/3 innings in a 24-2 loss to the Reds at Camden Yards.

The bullpen should be fresher after yesterday’s off-day, but a lengthy start from Dean Kremer tonight in D.C. would be welcomed.

Kremer has a 6.41 ERA and 1.475 WHIP in four outings and he’s twice topped out at 5 1/3 innings. He held the Guardians to one run in 5 1/3 in his last appearance.

Kremer is 3-0 with a 2.04 ERA in three career starts against the Nationals and 2-0 with a 2.31 ERA in two games in D.C., with three runs and 12 hits in 11 2/3 innings.

Alex Call is 2-for-5 with two doubles against Kremer.

Justin Verlander is the only pitcher to win his first four career outings against the Nationals, per STATS. Kremer has won his first three.

The Orioles are averaging 5.64 runs after a loss and have posted a 7-4 record.

Adley Rutschman hit his 56th career home run on Sunday to tie Elrod Hendricks for fifth most by an Orioles catcher. Chris Hoiles is first with 151.

The Orioles are facing another left-hander, Mitchell Parker, a fifth-round pick in the 2020 draft who has allowed five earned runs this season in 24 1/3 innings in his four starts. He’s surrendered only one home run.

Parker has gone 6 1/3, six, six and six innings. His four quality starts is the second-longest active streak in the majors after Houston’s Hunter Brown (seven), with a minimum of one start in 2025. Parker is the first Nationals pitcher to begin a season with four straight quality starts since Patrick Corbin in 2019 (five), according to STATS.

Right-handers hit .245/.304/.403 against Parker in his two seasons in the majors totaling 33 games, and left-handers hit .270/.312/.354.

Parker started against the Orioles in D.C. as a rookie last year and allowed two runs and five hits in 5 2/3 innings. Anthony Santander and Gunnar Henderson homered.

The Orioles are batting .184/.259/.253 against left-handers this season.

The Orioles are 57-41 against Washington and undefeated in the last seven series, going 4-0-3 to tie their longest active streak, per STATS. They also have won the last seven series against the Angels.

Josh Bell has an eight-game hitting streak against the Orioles, plus a career 1.071 OPS.
