Urías scratched from lineup, Mancini and Severino return

BOSTON - Ramón Urías worked out at third base this morning and has been scratched from the original lineup. Kelvin Gutiérrez is starting at third base.

Urías has been bothered by soreness in his right leg, which takes him in and out of the lineup.

"He went and tried to run this morning and it didn't feel great," said manager Brandon Hyde.

Anthony Santander is in left field again, a Fenway Park maneuver, with Austin Hays in right. Trey Mancini returns to the lineup as the designated hitter and Pedro Severino is back behind the plate.

Pat Valaika gets the start at second base, with Richie Martin at shortstop.

New reliever Brooks Kriske can become the 60th player used by the Orioles this season after they recalled him today from Triple-A Norfolk.

Kriske, 27, was a sixth-round pick in 2016 out of USC who made eight relief appearances for the Yankees this summer and allowed 13 earned runs (14 total) and 12 hits in 7 2/3 innings. He walked six batters and struck out seven. But he's registered a 2.36 ERA and 1.070 WHIP in four minor league seasons, with 176 strikeouts in 133 2/3 innings.

Kriske's major league debut came against the Orioles on July 29, 2020, and he tossed a scoreless ninth inning with one walk and two strikeouts, his same numbers when he faced them again in the second game of a Sept. 11 doubleheader in New York.

"We got Kriske off waivers, we're excited about that," Hyde said. "Just seen him briefly. He's got a great arm. I think command was a little bit of an issue in New York, but somebody they thought highly of and we're hoping that we can help him and he can stick with us."

The Orioles selected Thomas Eshelman's contract from Norfolk. He's in the bullpen for now, with the possibility of making a start later if needed.

"Eshelman, we added to give us some length out of the bullpen," Hyde said.

Alexander Wells is starting this afternoon and trying not to present the exact same look as Zac Lowther, who pitched yesterday and allowed three runs in the first inning before retiring eight in a row.

"I don't think it would matter if it was the next day or two days or three days, to be honest with you," Hyde said. "They're both left-handed, they don't have plus-plus velocity, but you need to make pitches and that's just who they are, and for them to stick in the big leagues and be able to pitch up here, they're going to have to have really good command.

"Zac was in the middle part of the plate in the first inning yesterday, got hit around, and the second and third were better. We're hoping that Alex can pitch like Zac did in the second and third inning today."

John Means is the only starter listed for the three-game series in Philadelphia. He starts Monday night.
