For weeks now, I have been recapping the offseason news around the Nationals organization, which is brought to you by MASNsports.com's Dan Kolko and Byron Kerr. While there has been much news this winter, each week, my fingers typed something having to do with the lack of news regarding Adam LaRoche. But now, this week, I can officially say that the first baseman will be back in The District for the next two seasons. LaRoche, who won his first Gold Glove in 2012, and the Nats agreed to a...

What we learned about Rizzo from the LaRoche negotiations

What we learned about Rizzo from the LaRoche negotiations
The weeks-long staredown between Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo and first baseman Adam LaRoche has concluded, with the free agent getting the two-year deal the Nats offered rather than the three-year contract he sought. What did we learn from these negotiations? (First, let's just agree that we can call them negotiations, even though there was precious little give and take. Rizzo drew a line in the sand, didn't waver and basically forced LaRoche's hand. It wasn't exactly a...

The Nats are continuing to gain national attention in the offseason, and were ranked the top roster in the majors, according to The Boston Globe's Nick Cafardo. If you were occupied by holiday festivities this week, it's OK, because it was a rather slow week of baseball news, barring the power rankings that labeled the Nats a team to watch for the 2013 season. ESPN's Buster Olney ranked the Nats second in his early power rankings. While D.C. is preparing to watch the Redskins fight for a division title, MASNsports.com's Dan Kolko compared the team's surprising season to that of the Nationals. Again, this week's news is the lack of news...

John Lannan signed a one-year deal with the Phillies, Tom Gorzelanny signed a two-year deal with the Brewers, and Edwin Jackson agreed to a four-year, $52 million deal with the Cubs. The Nats, however, have yet to make a deal with Adam LaRoche. Baseball America released its list of the top 10 prospects in the Nats' organization, which includes third baseman Zach Walters. A week removed from the Winter Meetings, the biggest news out of the Nationals organization is the lack of news. The Nats still have yet to make moves involving Michael Morse and/or Adam LaRoche, who Byron Kerr compares here. Where LaRoche will land for the 2013 season is uncertain, although the Nats said at the Winter Meetings that they were confident he would be back in D.C. Yesterday, the Angels announced that they had reached an agreement on a five-year, $125 million contract with...

You'll have to wait longer for Nats' first pick in 2013 draft

You'll have to wait longer for Nats' first pick in 2013 draft
For the most part, Nationals fans who treat the First-Year Player Draft in June like it was Christmas Day have not had to wait long to open their first present. Since their arrival in D.C. from Montreal before the 2005 season, the Nationals have traditionally drafted pretty high, the reward for usually finishing low in the standings. Take away their choice of Miami Gardens, Fla., prep outfielder Chris Marrero with the 15th selection in the 2006 draft and last year's selection of California...

For Rizzo and Nats, patience preferred over spendthrift ways

For Rizzo and Nats, patience preferred over spendthrift ways
If you're not an aficionado of Rotisserie League Baseball - yes, capitalized and trademarked, to distinguish it from the generic and bastardized forms of fantasy sports not invented by founding father Dan Okrent - you might be wondering why the Nationals are being so frugal when they've obviously got money to spend and needs to fill. The $13 million they shelled out for one year of Dan Haren is way less than the $100 million-plus that Zack Greinke will command, and it's not like the...

"Talented workhorse" Haren passes physical, thrilled to join stacked rotation

"Talented workhorse" Haren passes physical, thrilled to join stacked rotation
If Dan Haren has hip and back problems that threaten his career and scare off potential employers, it's news to the right-hander, whose one-year, $13 million deal with the Nationals became official Friday after he passed the physical performed earlier in the week. "I'm 100 percent confident I'll be healthy this year and I feel I'll be able to contribute at a high level," he told reporters during a conference call Friday afternoon. Haren admits to dealing with a nagging hip problem, but...

Nats officially announce signing of Dan Haren

Nats officially announce signing of Dan Haren
We're still awaiting word on the results of right-hander Dan Haren's physical before his one-year, $13 million deal with the Nationals becomes official. Haren was supposed to fly into Washington, D.C., on Wednesday evening, then undergo a physical yesterday. Coincidentally, Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo departed the Winter Meetings in Nashville on Wednesday afternoon - a full day before most teams' executives - and returned to D.C. While it's doubtful the Nationals would have...

The 2012 Winter Meetings have come to a close. All buzz this week was covered by MASN's Dan Kolko. In case you missed any Winter Meetings news, here's a recap of the week. Bank on LaRoche and Rizzo finally finding their way to an agreement

Bank on LaRoche and Rizzo finally finding their way to an agreement
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Mike Rizzo has departed the Gaylord Opryland Convention Center and Resort, leaving first baseman Adam LaRoche to ponder the Nationals' two-year contract offer. LaRoche remains in his Kansas home, perhaps whiling away the Winter Meetings in a hunter's blind and wondering why he can't garner anything more substantial than a two-year deal after winning a Gold Glove and a Silver Slugger for a team that won more games than any other in the major leagues. But what looks...

Rizzo, Nats will work to restock starting pitching depth, too

Rizzo, Nats will work to restock starting pitching depth, too
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - When teams make a major move, there's often a minor transaction that accompanies the bigger, flashier one. Often, it happens days, even weeks after the headline-grabbing news, and it's relegated to much smaller type - or barely noticed at all. By agreeing to terms with right-hander Dan Haren on a deal reportedly worth $13 million for one year, the Nationals solved one of the major items on general manager Mike Rizzo's checklist for the Winter Meetings. Assuming he passes...

If Orioles want to talk trade, Rizzo will listen

If Orioles want to talk trade, Rizzo will listen
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nationals may be located just 35 miles from the Orioles, but that distance along the Baltimore-Washington Parkway might as well be a chasm that can't be crossed when it comes to trade talks between the neighboring teams. The Nationals haven't made a deal with the Orioles since arriving in D.C. from Montreal before the 2005 season. The last deal of substance between the clubs came on March 13, 1996, when the Expos shipped outfielder Tony Tarasco - now the Nats' first...

Filling the left-handed void in the Nationals' bullpen

Filling the left-handed void in the Nationals' bullpen
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Since there's a dearth of left-handed relief pitching available on the free agent market, the Nationals are going to have to be creative when finding southpaws to round out their bullpen. Sean Burnett is angling for a four-year deal, which only works against his return and complicates general manager Mike Rizzo's to-do list at the Winter Meetings. Right now, the prospects of Burnett re-signing and the available left-handers present a bit of a conundrum for the Nationals....
