Bryce Harper and Wilson Ramos were shut out from winning Rawlings Gold Glove Awards in the National League after being named finalists for the first time this year. A pair of Cardinals - right fielder Jason Heyward and catcher Yadier Molina - won the honors over Harper and Ramos.
Harper's historic season at the plate helped the slugger gain recognition earlier tonight by the Baseball Writers' Association of America as a finalist for NL Most Valuable Player. But Harper also impressed during his first full season playing right field, instinctually taking proper angles to cut off balls while using his speed for countless web gems.
Harper's eight outfield assists tied for sixth-best among major league outfielders, while his cannon of a right arm also continually prevented extra bases throughout the season.
Harper's seven defensive runs saved ranked fourth, according to FanGraphs.com. The 23-year-old also finished fourth in SABR defensive index (4.9).
Ramos isn't typically thought of as one of the better defensive catchers in the league, but in 2015, he tied for the major league lead with the Blue Jays' Russell Martin by throwing out 44 percent (24 of 54) potential basestealers. Ramos also tied for first with Giants catcher Buster Posey in defensive runs saved (nine), according to FanGraphs.com, and ranked second behind Posey with an 8.6 SABR defensive index.
Ramos was behind the plate for both of Max Scherzer's no-hitters and caught a career-high 1,078 1/3 innings in 2015.
It was Molina's eighth straight Gold Glove and Heyward's third in the last four years.
