Detwiler to DL, plus postgame quotes after 5-4 Nats win

Prior to today's game, manager Davey Johnson said that Ross Detwiler was "questionable" for Monday's start against the Phillies. It doesn't seem like there's much question anymore. Johnson said after the Nats' 5-4 win over the Padres today that Detwiler will land on the disabled list, allowing him time to rest his stiff back. "He's a tough customer," Johnson said. "But he understood the value of getting by this thing. He got a whole of treatment today and so hopefully we can get by, he'll be good coming back after the break. ... He may have a miraculous recovery, who knows? But I think everybody, doctors and Det and all of us feel like that's the best way to go." Dan Haren (shoulder inflammation) is eligible to come off the disabled list Monday, and assuming Detwiler does go on the DL, Haren would slide into his spot in the Nats' rotation and get the start against the Phillies. This will be Detwiler's second time on the DL in the last two months. He missed over three weeks with an oblique strain that he suffered in May. Meanwhile, the Nationals picked up a one-run win today over the Padres in a back-and-forth ballgame, which saw them blow a two-run lead when Ross Ohlendorf surrendered a three-run homer in the sixth only to then snatch the lead back for good in the seventh. Bryce Harper went 1-for-2 with a single and three RBIs today, an unusual line, but a productive one. A day after Johnson said he was giving Harper the weekend off, Harper had the RBI single, drove in a run with a bases-loaded walk and tied the game in the seventh with a sac fly. Harper had gone 0-for-his-last-18 coming into today, but he was able to talk his way into the lineup today after texting Johnson last night and telling him, "Play me or trade me." "I was pretty serious about what I said," Harper said after today's game. "I want to play. I wanted to play every single day. I think if he wants to put me in the lineup, then I want to be in the lineup. If he doesn't, I'm going to try to make him put me in the lineup. It's something that I want to do every day. I'm going to grind through everything that I do, play as hard as I can, and good things will happen. "Mentally, physically, it's always a grind. I'm just trying to go out there and have good ABs. It's going to take 40-50 ABs to get back and get ready. Twenty ABs down in the minors isn't going to do it. It's a little different game up here. I was just trying to have good ABs today and win a ballgame." Jordan Zimmermann failed to go at least six innings today for just the third time in 18 starts this season. He went 5 1/3, allowing three runs on five hits, and had to deal with a stiff neck that's been a lingering issue for a handful of weeks now. "It's been ongoing for a little while, but I'll be fine," Zimmerman said. "Today, I was just deep into counts all game and they were battling and made me work out there. It was probably one of the hotter games I've ever pitched in, so that definitely doesn't help. "It's not like cramping, just a little stiff. I can't really extend as much as I'd like to and get out there, but I'll be fine." After Harper and Ryan Zimmerman came through with back-to-back RBIs in the seventh to put the Nats on top, Drew Storen delivered a smooth, five-pitch eighth inning. Rafael Soriano made things slightly - just slightly - more interesting in the ninth, when he put two runners in scoring position and then gave up a hot-shot ground ball to first that looked like it might get through the infield and allow the Padres to take the lead with two outs. Adam LaRoche made a dive to his right, gloved the grounder off the bat of Everth Cabrera, and then flipped to a covering Soriano for the final out. Soriano pumped his fist, LaRoche did the same, and the Nats picked up their third straight win. Was Zimmerman holding his breath when Cabrera turned on the ball and smacked it to the right side? "To see if Sori will get over there," Zimmerman said, cracking a big smile. "That's the fastest I've seen him run. Rochie obviously makes plays like that all the time. But for Sori to get over there ... We're starting to play better baseball, we're coming together, we're getting a little lucky. Every now and then, just gotta keep going."
