Frandsen re-signs with Nationals (updated)

The Nationals have re-signed one of their top bench performers from 2014, re-upping with Kevin Frandsen on a one-year, $1 million deal for 2015, according to ESPN's Jerry Crasnick.

Per Crasnick, the deal also contains incentives that could pay Frandsen an additional $300,000.

Frandsen hit .259/.299/.309 with the Nats in 2014, hitting one home run and driving in 17.

A lot of Frandsen's value, both this season and in the past, also comes from his versatility. The 32-year-old played four positions for the Nationals this season, appearing in 21 games in left field, 16 at third base, 13 at second base and nine at first base.

He also was the team's emergency catcher, although manager Matt Williams never needed to call on him in that role.

Frandsen had only started three games in his entire career in left field (and none since 2007) prior to this year. But when Bryce Harper and Ryan Zimmerman went down with injuries early in the season, Frandsen slid in and played left, and did a solid job out there while also making one of the more impressive (and ridiculous) defensive plays of the season.

Frandsen signed with the Nats at the very end of spring training after requesting his release from the Phillies. He made $900,000 this season and was entering his final year being arbitration eligible.

Update: The Nationals officially announced the one-year deal with Frandsen this afternoon. The deal now leaves the team with 10 remaining players eligible for arbitration: left-handers Jerry Blevins and Ross Detwiler; right-handers Tyler Clippard, Doug Fister, Craig Stammen, Drew Storen and Stephen Strasburg; infielder Danny Espinosa; and catchers Jose Lobaton and Wilson Ramos.
