You've probably seen the forecast here, not only for tonight but for most of the day tomorrow. If you haven't, it's not good. That creates a problem for the Nationals and Rockies, who don't face each other again after this weekend and need to do everything humanly possible to play three games before either club leaves town. As always, you'll know when we know.
Tonight's series opener between a division leader and a wild card leader features Tanner Roark on the mound for the Nationals, looking to continue his recent surge. The right-hander is 2-0 with a 1.38 ERA and 16 strikeouts in 13 innings in his first two starts coming out of the All-Star break, a significant development for a team that suddenly is watching its rotation much closer than it was a week ago.
Tonight also features the return of Ian Desmond to Nationals Park, his first appearance here since the final home game of the 2015 season (better known as the time Jonathan Papelbon choked Bryce Harper). Here's hoping Desmond gets a warm ovation from the Washington crowd when he steps to the plate for the first time as a visiting player. Whether that happens tonight or sometime tomorrow.
Update: Tonight's game has been postponed. With the rain expected to continue into Saturday afternoon, they've already decided just to wait until Sunday for the makeup game. They'll play a day-night doublehader, with the regularly scheduled game still at 1:35 p.m. and the makeup game at 7:05 p.m. Tickets for tonight's game will be honored at the nightcap. Roark will start Saturday night's game now, with Erick Fedde and Edwin Jackson starting the Sunday doubleheader (order TBA). Oh, and Desmond was placed on the 10-day DL today by the Rockies with a strained calf, so he unfortunately won't be able to play at all this weekend.
