The Nationals can't clinch the division title tonight, but they can get as close as possible without finishing the deal. With the magic number now at three, a Nats win over the Phillies combined with a Marlins loss at Atlanta would set the stage for them to control their own destiny Sunday afternoon and not have to worry about the result of another game. That's always a preferable scenario.
Tonight, it'll be Edwin Jackson looking to bounce back from a rare rough start. The veteran was tagged for five runs in 5 2/3 innings in Milwaukee, one of only two times in nine starts this season he has allowed more than three earned runs.
Jackson will be working with a new batterymate, with Raudy Read getting his first career major league start behind the plate. The 23-year-old has taken four at-bats since his call-up (going 2-for-4) but he has played only one inning in the field thus far, so we'll get a good look at his catching skills this evening.
