It's Game 162, which has meant many different things over the years. Sometimes it's a celebration of a great regular season and final prep for the Division Series. Sometimes it's a meaningful game to determine a postseason berth or home-field advantage. Sometimes it's the end of a long road that won't continue.
For the Nationals, this Game 162 is simply a bridge between a week's worth of big games and Tuesday's wild card showdown. The only thing at stake is a chance to finish 93-69, which would be quite an achievement in its own right. No major league team has gone from 12 games under .500 to 24 games over .500 in 105 years. The Nats would achieve that with a win today, not to mention a perfect 8-0 homestand to end the regular season.
We, of course, still don't know who will be coming here for Tuesday's wild card game. Here's the scenario: If the Cardinals win today, it's the Brewers at the Nationals in the wild card game. If the Cardinals lose today and the Brewers win, they'll square off Monday in St. Louis for the NL Central title, then the loser comes to Washington for Tuesday's winner-take-all game.
