LOS ANGELES - The sun is shining, the mountains in the distance aren't being obscured by smog and Max Scherzer is facing Clayton Kershaw tonight at Dodger Stadium. Yep, this is about as good as it gets.
The Nationals and Dodgers open up a big weekend series at Chavez Ravine, and they're starting it off in style with as good a pitching showdown as you can get. Scherzer versus Kershaw represents only the 13th head-to-head matchup in major league history (postseason included) between pitchers who each already owned three Cy Young Awards entering the game.
Scherzer, as you might expect, has enjoyed plenty of success against the Dodgers in his career. Of the members of tonight's lineup, only Yasiel Puig (3-for-9) owns a batting average better than than .250 against the Nats ace.
Kershaw, as you might not expect, has not dominated every member of the Nationals lineup. Ryan Zimmerman (10-for-31), Howie Kendrick (6-for-15), Trea Turner (3-for-9) and Anthony Rendon (7-for-23) all have good numbers against him. Alas, Rendon isn't in the lineup tonight, out for the sixth consecutive game. It's been a full week since he fouled a ball off his left big toe. He has not been placed on the disabled list.
