Game 21 lineups: Nats vs. Blue Jays in Dunedin

The Nationals need to generate offense any way they can right now. How do they do that, given the resources currently available to them? They have to stick with some of their struggling regulars and sprinkle in some backups who create more favorable matchups.

Tonight, with left-hander Steven Matz on the mound for the Blue Jays, that means an emphasis on right-handed hitters. Manager Davey Martinez decided the best way to do that was to stack four right-handed bats atop his lineup (Trea Turner, Josh Harrison, Ryan Zimmerman, Starlin Castro), bump Josh Bell to the sixth spot and give Hernán Pérez a rare start in right field.

Pérez hasn't been in the lineup in 18 days. Since then, he has made three appearances: One as a pinch-hitter and two as a pitcher! But with no backup right-handed outfielder on the current roster, Martinez didn't really have any other options, aside from starting both Kyle Schwarber and Yadiel Hernandez against a lefty. He decided to go with Pérez over Hernandez, despite the latter's impressive week as Juan Soto's replacement in right field.

Meanwhile, Erick Fedde is on the mound for the Nats, trying to continue his strong start to the season against a formidable Blue Jays lineup. Fedde will need to do everything in his power to limit the damage Vladimir Guerrero Jr. can inflict on him. Good luck with that.
