SAN FRANCISCO - It's not as warm here as it was a few hundred miles down the coast over the weekend, but it's no less pleasant as the Nationals shift from Los Angeles to San Francisco for the final leg of their road trip.
After dropping two-of-three in frustrating fashion to the Dodgers, the Nats have a chance to come home with a winning record on the trip if they can take two-of-three from the Giants, who still are without Madison Bumgarner. It'll be right-hander Chris Stratton (owner of a 3.29 ERA in 24 career appearances, 14 starts) facing the Nationals for the second time in his career. How'd it go the first time? Well, Stratton tossed 6 2/3 scoreless innings with 10 strikeouts on Aug. 13, 2017, the day after Bryce Harper injured his knee.
If the Nats can get Stratton out of the game, they'll go up against a San Francisco bullpen that now features closer Hunter Strickland. Yeah, that could get interesting if a certain left-hander slugger comes up to bat in the ninth inning of a close game. Stay tuned.
Gio Gonzalez makes the start for the Nationals. He's been up-and-down in this ballpark, with a 3.95 ERA in seven career starts that includes a bad one in 2015, a dominant one in 2016 and then a so-so one last year.
