Game 38 lineups: Nats at Braves (Kieboom recalled)

Friday's doubleheader took a lot out of the Nationals, who over the course of 14 innings of baseball used eight pitchers, gave up 16 runs on 18 hits and eight walks, allowed seven homers and threw 259 pitches. So, what do they have left in the tank for tonight's game in Atlanta?

Well, they've got Erick Fedde starting, and they've got to hope he can provide some quality innings so Davey Martinez can hold off on his bullpen as long as possible. Fedde was pretty good in his first five starts, all coming against the Yankees, Blue Jays, Mets and Orioles. He had more trouble in his last two starts, each against the Phillies. He faces a significant challenge tonight in a Braves lineup that is loaded, especially the top half.

The Nationals lineup also is beat up after both Juan Soto and Josh Harrison went down Friday. Neither injury appears to be serious, but Soto (sore left elbow) is likely to miss several days while Harrison (bruised left forearm) hopes to be able to play through his pain.

Thumbnail image for Kendrick-HR-Swing-Blue-WS-G7-Sidebar.jpgThey need as many good bats as they can get tonight because they're facing one of the National League's best in Max Fried. The 26-year-old lefty, who comes from the same Southern California high school that produced Lucas Giolito and Jack Flaherty, is 6-0 with a 1.60 ERA and has not surrendered a homer in 45 innings this season.

It's been a busy afternoon already for the Nationals, who announced a new contract extension for general manager Mike Rizzo. (A source confirmed it's for three years, keeping Rizzo in his position through the 2023 season.) And then the club announced a roster move: Carter Kieboom has been recalled from the alternate training site and Wilmer Difo has been designated for assigment. Given the aforementioned injuries, the Nats were short on bats, and facing a lefty tonight it makes sense they would call up Kieboom. Difo, who was out of options, will need to clear waivers before he can be sent down to the minors.
