If it feels like it has been a while since the Nationals last played a ballgame, it has been. They had Friday off. Then yesterday's game got rained/snowed/colded out. So it's been nearly 72 hours since their last game, which in baseball terms is an eternity. In fact, the Nats have only played a ballgame in 12 of the last 21 days, thanks to rainouts and off-days. That's pretty unusual.
The good news: The sun is out today and they'll be able to play. The bad news: It's going to be quite cold for baseball, with temperatures in the upper 40s when Joe Ross takes the mound at 1:35 p.m. We'll see how the 22-year-old Californian deals with that.
We'll also see how Marlins starter Tom Koehler deals with Bryce Harper, his most-feared opponent. Harper is 7-for-24 with five homers in his career against the right-hander, with four of those homers coming in 11 head-to-head at-bats last season. Keep in mind that Harper's next homer will be the 100th of his career, no insignificant milestone for a 23-year-old.
One lineup change for the Nats: Ryan Zimmerman, who has been quite active on the bases and in the field so far, is getting the day off in the cold. Clint Robinson gets the start at first base today. As Dusty Baker put it: "I wanted Big Boy to get some at-bats."
