Don't blink or you might miss the Nationals' homestand. Seriously, it's only two games and tomorrow's finale against the White Sox is a matinee. Not sure I can ever remember a homestand that brief.
The Nats and White Sox actually will face each other four times over the next week-plus, with a two-game series on the South Side coming up next Monday and Tuesday. So maybe it's better to think of this as a four-game series with a long break (in San Diego) in the middle.
Whatever the case, there's a pretty good storyline to tonight's opener on South Capitol Street, with Reynaldo López making the start for Chicago against the team that included him in the blockbuster 2016 trade that brought Adam Eaton to D.C. The breakout star of that deal at the moment is Lucas Giolito (8-1, 2.54 ERA) but the big right-hander isn't scheduled to pitch in this series, so the focus will be on López, who had a solid 3.91 ERA in 32 starts last season but has struggled (3-5, 6.20 ERA) in 12 starts this season.
Eaton hasn't exactly been tearing it up himself of late. The right fielder is batting .207 with only two extra-base hits over his last 24 games, bringing his season batting average down to .262. The Nationals need this guy to be better, not only to win the trade but to win more games.
