The Nationals don't often oversell injuries, but it looks like perhaps they did with Matt Adams this week. When Adams departed Monday night's game in Chicago with an oblique strain, manager Davey Martinez admitted he was concerned. And the club considered placing the big slugger on the injured list. But they decided to hold off for a couple of days and see if Adams responded well to treatment, and sure enough he was able to pinch-hit Friday night and now is back in the lineup this afternoon.
Adams will be batting fifth and starting at first base, helping add depth to a Nationals lineup that would love to score some early runs today and give Stephen Strasburg a lead. This lineup will be going up against Diamondbacks rookie right-hander Taylor Clarke, an Ashburn native who went to Broad Run High School.
Clarke has had a rough go of it so far, with a 5.26 ERA and 1.403 WHIP in six big league games (five starts). A third-round pick in the 2015 draft out of the College of Charleston, he didn't have sterling minor league numbers, either (4.03 ERA last season, 7.22 ERA this season).
Strasburg looks to continue his strong early summer; the right-hander is 4-0 with a 2.91 ERA and 0.941 WHIP over his last five starts. And he's gone at least seven innings in four of those starts.
