Gonzalez already setting Nationals records (Nats lose 2-0)

Gio Gonzalez has now made five starts in his Nationals career. In that brief time, he already has set a Nats team record. Including his three scoreless innings starting today's ballgame, Gonzalez has now thrown 23 straight scoreless frames, the most in team history. It breaks the previous record of 21 consecutive scoreless innings, shared by John Lannan (2008) and Drew Storen (2011). Over the course of these 23 shutout innings, Gonzalez has allowed just seven hits and five walks, and if you include the five strikeouts he's already recorded today, he has 26 strikeouts in that time. Yeah, the lefty's been pretty good. Meanwhile, the Nationals continue to have problems scoring runs and getting runners on base. They've had just two runners reach base through four innings, and stranded Ian Desmond after their leadoff hitter led off the fourth with a double and moved to third with one out. The power hitting has been lacking this season, and the situational hitting hasn't been much better. Tyler Moore grounded out to third in his first major league at-bat, and Bryce Harper also grounded out to Juan Uribe in his first at-bat of the day. Update: Gonzalez's scoreless streak reached 25 innings before James Loney's two-run single in the sixth inning ended the run of zeros and put the Nats in a 2-0 hole. Now, the Nats' hitters will have to (gulp) pick Gonzalez up and bring across a couple runs here in the late innings. Update: Not even Harper could save the Nats in this series. The Dodgers beat the Nats 2-0 today, completing a three-game sweep and giving Washington its fourth straight loss. Harper went 2-for-6 with a walk and a couple dazzling defensive plays during the last two days, but the Nats offense just continues to struggle to get runs across. Gonzalez is credited with his first loss of the season despite allowing two runs in six innings, and the Nats fall to 14-8 on the season.
