VIERA, Fla. - It's a lazy Saturday morning here at Nationals camp, the doldrums of spring training starting to set in. Everyone is heading over to the back fields now for another full-squad workout, featuring the usual live BP sessions, defensive drills, etc.
The biggest news of the morning so far: Danny Espinosa shaved his beard. Given how big it had grown, it might well have taken two hours to do it. You'll be happy to know (or perhaps horrified to know) that Danny had his official scoreboard photo taken yesterday, before he shaved. So that beard will live on in gigantic form all season long in every ballpark in the National League.
(Yeah, it's kind of a slow day here so far.)
Fortunately, the monotony will be broken up a bit tomorrow. That's because the Nats will be holding the first of two intrasquad games, something they haven't done here under previous administrations. (My memory is fuzzy, but I feel like I remember Manny Acta holding at least one of these way back in the day.)
Tomorrow's intrasquad game is scheduled for 11 a.m. It'll be played inside Space Coast Stadium. (UPDATE: The game will be open to the public, with free admission and gates opening at 10 a.m.)
The highly anticipated pitching matchup: Max Scherzer vs. Joe Ross. Don't get too excited, though, because it looks like everybody will be limited to one inning on the mound. And don't try to infer the rotation order from this, because they're not on a five-day program yet.
The full pitching list for the yet-to-be-named Team A: Scherzer, Yusmeiro Petit, Sammy Solis, Sean Burnett, Nick Lee, Matt Grace, Austin Voth, Wander Suero.
And the full pitching list for the yet-to-be-named Team B: Ross, Tanner Roark, Rafael Martin, Nick Masset, Erik Davis, Taylor Jordan, Abel De Los Santos, Paulo Espino.
Stay tuned for lineups and other exciting intrasquad info.
