It's Werth looking at the numbers

Since coming back from a broken wrist on August 2, Jayson Werth has done a little bit of everything. He's gotten on base in big spots, setting the table for his teammates. He's put together his power stroke, showing he hasn't lost the form he displayed early in the season before his injury forced him to miss 75 games. He's added even more stability to a Nationals lineup which is really rounding into form. In nine games since his return (eight starts), Werth is hitting .400 (12-for-30) with three doubles, three RBIs and six walks. He's posted a .500 on-base percentage, is slugging .500 and has at least one hit in every game he's played in with the exception of one. Werth got off to a strong start to the season, hitting .276 with a .810 OPS prior to breaking his left wrist in a game against the Phillies. It was such a major injury and required such a long layoff that no one could have been sure how the veteran outfielder would perform upon his return. So far, so good. Werth started off strong immediately after getting back into action, but he's looked to really be putting things together at the plate the last few days. He crushed a ball to deep center field on Thursday that would have been a home run in 29 of the 30 major league parks. Because the Nats were playing in Minute Maid Park, however, it stayed in the yard, and Astros center fielder Justin Maxwell hauled it in with a sweet diving play. No matter. Werth went out last night and ripped two doubles, the second of which brought in two insurance runs in the Nationals' four-run ninth inning. Werth has hit sixth in all but one game that he's started since coming off the DL, but that'll change tonight. Manager Davey Johnson told reporters after last night's win over the Diamondbacks that Werth will lead off tonight, marking his first time in the leadoff spot this season. His season average is now up to .305, his on-base percentage is .403 and Werth seems to have found the comfort zone which he might have been lacking during his first season in a Nationals uniform.
