As far as Grapefruit League games go, this is about as good as it gets. Max Scherzer versus Jacob deGrom, late in camp, with tons of regulars in the lineup for both teams.
In what very well may be a preview of opening night at Nationals Park, arguably the two best pitchers in the National League (winners of four consecutive Cy Young Awards from 2016-19) are each taking the mound today in West Palm Beach, Fla. Each has been stretched out enough so far this spring to be able to go at least five innings this afternoon. The only question is how much do they want to show the lineup they'll be opposing for real in 11 days?
That's important because most of both teams' regulars are starting today. Nationals manager Davey Martinez is going with a 1-through-5 that sure looks like his preferred batting order: Victor Robles, Juan Soto, Trea Turner, Josh Bell and Kyle Schwarber. Yan Gomes, batting seventh, is behind the plate to work with Scherzer after Alex Avila caught his previous starts.
You can listen to Charlie Slowes and Dave Jageler's call of the game on 106.7 The Fan.
Update: The Nationals were going to use Gerardo Parra as the designated hitter today, but apparently Scherzer decided he wanted to bat. So he and deGrom are literally going to face each other in the first true National League-style game of the spring.
