FORT MYERS, Fla. - If there is a significant competition in Nationals camp this spring, it's in center field, with top prospect Victor Robles trying to prove he's ready for the starting job ahead of the erratic Michael A. Taylor.
And though it's too early for any hard decisions about the fate of that competition, manager Davey Martinez pointed out today what's probably the understood truth but might get overlooked by those wanting to see one of the two seize the job.
"Here's the deal with both of those guys: As we move along, we need them both," Martinez said. "They're both going to play. Michael's doing very well. And Victor's doing well. I'd like to see Victor play a little more this spring. But center field, both of them are going to play there. Whether it's a competition or whatever, I view it as: They need to get ready."
It's long been assumed the only way Robles would make the opening day roster is if he's declared the everyday center field. General manager Mike Rizzo has always insisted top prospects need to play every day, whether in the majors or minors.
But given their current construction, the Nationals probably need both Robles and Taylor on their 25-man roster, unless they want to give a bench spot to a less-touted outfielder like Andrew Stevenson.
On top of that, the club needs a backup right fielder to spell Adam Eaton, who has missed considerable time the last two seasons due to leg injuries. Robles would fill that role.
"I wouldn't mind seeing Victor in right field, because the days that we're going to give Eaton a day off, Michael will play (center)," Martinez said. "So you might see him in right field."
Taylor has burst out of the gates in impressive fashion, using his newly simplified swing to go 4-for-6 with three doubles and a walk.
"I love what Michael has done so far," Martinez said. "His swing is so short right now. And that's the big thing for me. Because he's going to hit for power. He's strong, he's got that leverage. ... We told him: 'You're a doubles guy. Work gaps, hit doubles, get on base, steal bases. That's who you are.' And go play great defense, because we all know he can do that. So far, he's been unbelievable."
Robles has started off 1-for-5, but he has drawn two walks, stolen two bases and scored three runs. The 21-year-old is still working on taking more charge of the outfield when he's in center, but his personality continues to be infectious.
"You don't see him as a take-charge guy (yet), but when he does play he tries to catch everything," Martinez said. "Which I really love. He's good. He's fun to be around. When you watch him and (Juan) Soto in the dugout, they're like two little kids. They bring all this energy to the players, always joking around and talking. Nothing ever seems to get Victor down. He's just happy to be here, help us win. He's very electric."
So, does that mean Robles is assured of making the opening day roster?
"I'm not going to assume anything," Martinez said. "It's early. We're going to go through spring training and see what happens. But he's going to be a big part of this year."
