Nationals acquire right-hander Perry, ship Balester to Detroit

While the Nationals didn't make any headlines during the Winter Meetings, the team won't finish the week without at least one move.
According to a press release, the Nationals have acquired right-handed reliever Ryan Perry from the Tigers in exchange for reliever Collin Balester.
Perry spent three seasons in Detroit, amassing a 5-6 record with 29 holds, two saves and a 4.07 ERA. During that stretch, the 24-year-old made 149 relief appearances, allowing 73 earned runs over 161.1 innings pitched.
Taken in the first round in 2008, Perry excels at keeping the ball on the ground, as he boasts a 52.1 percent ground-ball ratio, according to STATS, Inc. He averages 7.2 strikeouts per nine innings and last year allowed just one home run in 37 innings with the Tigers.
In exchange for Perry, the Nationals have sent Balester to the Motor City. Balester, 25, was originally drafted by the Expos in 2004 and finished 5-16 with a 5.17 ERA in 62 games with the franchise from 2008-11.
