Nationals play host to 50th Congressional Baseball Game

Looking for some baseball to fill the void during the All-Star break? Nationals fans, you're in for a treat. On Thursday, July 14, Democrats and Republicans will meet on the diamond, as Nationals Park serves as host for the 50th anniversary of the Congressional Baseball Game for charity. It's a chance for fans to watch our nation's two primary political parties become even more divided, this time substituting the podium and microphone for a glove and a bat. The game itself is an intense, seven-inning affair, complete with umpires and all of the trash talk you'd expect from a heated competition. This year, GOP Manager Joe Barton (TX-6) will lead his roster of 40 Republicans against the squad of 21 Democrats led by manager Mike Doyle (PA-14). Democrats are seeking their third straight win over the Republicans, a win which would help them win the best-of-five series and capture the coveted championship trophy. In the past, the Congressional Baseball Game has included some big names in Washington, including former U.S. Presidents George H.W. Bush and Gerald Ford, as well as Hall of Fame athletes like Steve Largent and Jim Bunning. This year, Hall of Fame pitcher Phil Niekro will be on hand to throw out the first pitch. Gates open at 5:30 p.m., with first pitch slated for 7 p.m.. Tickets are just $10 and will benefit the Washington Literacy Council and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Washington.
