Nationals recall left-hander Sammy Solis from Triple-A Syracuse

The Washington Nationals recalled left-handed pitcher Sammy Solis from Triple-A Syracuse on Thursday and placed right-handed pitcher Stephen Strasburg on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to July 24, with a right elbow nerve impingement. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement.

Solis, 28, returns to the Nationals' Major League roster after six games with Triple-A Syracuse. The left-handed reliever went 1-2 with a 4.50 ERA in six games with the Chiefs after being optioned to Triple-A on July 9. He has appeared in 10 games at the Major League level this season, missing 65 games from April 19-July 1 with left elbow inflammation.

Strasburg, 29, will visit the disabled list for the first time this season. The two-time All-Star is 10-3 with a 3.25 ERA in 20 starts for Washington this season. His ERA is the eighth-best mark in the National League this season, and he also ranks among NL leaders in strikeouts-per-nine innings (4th, 1.43), strikeout-to-walk ratio (7th, 3.81), and WHIP (5th, 1.12).
