Nationals Sign Left-Handed Pitcher Scott Olsen to One-Year Contract

The Washington Nationals today signed free-agent left-handed pitcher Scott Olsen to a one-year contract. Nationals Senior Vice President & General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement. Olsen went 2-4 with a 6.03 ERA in 11 starts with the Nationals in 2009, his first season in Washington. Olsen is 33-41 with a 4.77 ERA in 113 career big league games/112 starts spanning five seasons with Washington (2009) and Florida (2005-08). Olsen's 2009 campaign was cut short upon having season-ending left-shoulder surgery performed on July 23. The procedure--a debridement of the RC joint and the labrum--was performed in Washington, DC by Dr. Wiemi Douoguih. Despite the surgery, the 25 year-old Olsen is expected to be ready for Spring Training. He recently completed his post-surgery rehabilitation phase and is currently training and throwing per usual in preparation for the 2010 season.
