Nationals trade catcher Sandy Leon to Red Sox

The Washington Nationals traded catcher Sandy Leon to the Boston Red Sox on Monday in exchange for cash considerations. President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement.

Leon, 26, spent parts of the three previous seasons with the Nationals, hitting .189 in 34 Major League games. In 550 Minor League games over eight seasons, Leon is a career .236 hitter with a .324 on-base percentage and .329 slugging percentage. In 2,078 plate appearances, he hit 85 doubles, 10 triples and 21 home runs.

In his previous five seasons (between the Major and Minor Leagues) Leon threw out 186 of 382 base runners (49 percent).

The Venezuela native signed with the Nationals on Jan. 17, 2007 after a private workout in his home country.
