Nats announce minor league invitees, 61 players in camp

Sixty-one players in total will report for spring training this week, 21 of them non-roster invitees including several with significant major league experience and several prospects from within their own organization, the Nationals announced today.

With pitchers and catchers officially set to report Wednesday, the Nationals finally revealed the full spring roster, which still could expand given the plethora of prominent free agents who have yet to sign.

For now, camp will feature a full 40-man roster (newly acquired utilityman Matt Reynolds replaced suspended catcher Raudy Read), 17 free agents who were signed to minor league contracts this winter and four in-house minor leaguers who were extended invitations to big league camp.

Among the players to join the organization on minor league deals ...

* Veteran catcher Miguel Montero, signed last week and given an opportunity to compete with Pedro Severino for the backup spot behind Matt Wieters. Fellow catcher Jhonatan Solano, a longtime member of the Nationals organization, also returns on a minor league contract.

* Right-hander Edwin Jackson, who went 5-6 with a 5.07 ERA in 13 starts for the Nats last summer and fall and will provide some veteran insurance in case A.J. Cole and Erick Fedde are deemed insufficient to fill the final spot in the opening day rotation.

* Right-handed reliever David Goforth, who spent the last seven seasons in the Brewers organization and has 31 games of big league experience.

* Left-hander Tim Collins, a steady member of the Royals bullpen from 2011-14 who then missed two seasons after undergoing a pair of Tommy John surgeries but returned to appear in 18 minor league games with the Nationals last season.

* Lefty Tom Milone, who made his major league debut for the Nationals in 2011 before he was dealt to the Athletics as part of the Gio Gonzalez trade. The soon-to-be 31-year-old has started 126 big league games since for five organizations, including eight for the Mets and Brewers last season.

* Lefty Bryan Harper, who has spent the last seven seasons in the Nationals farm system but now will finally get a chance to join younger brother Bryce Harper in a big league clubhouse after rehabbing last year from Tommy John surgery.

* Infielders Reid Brignac, who has played in 369 big league games with six organizations, and Chris Dominguez, who has played 22 games for the Reds and Giants.

Ryan-Raburn-swing-blue-sidebar.jpg* Outfielders Ryan Raburn, who played 25 games for the Nationals last summer and has spent parts of 12 seasons in the majors, and Moises Sierra, who has 180 games of big league experience with the Blue Jays and White Sox.

The minor leaguers who were given invitations to big league camp are reliever Jimmy Cordero, catchers Taylor Gushue and Spencer Kieboom, and infielder Osvaldo Abreu.
