Nats grab early lead in Milwaukee (Zimmerman homers in 16th, Nats win 4-2)

The Nationals wasted no time scoring against the Brewers' Yovani Gallardo. Denard Span singled to right field for the Nats' first hit of the night. With Anthony Rendon batting, Span stole his 13th bag of the season. Span then went to third on Rendon's single and scored on Jayson Werth's RBI groundout to give the Nats a 1-0 lead. Gallardo has allowed just two runs in his last 21 innings, struck out 20 and walked three. The Nats lineup made Gallardo throw 29 pitches in the first. Jordan Zimmermann retired the Brewers' batters in order on just 10 pitches in the bottom of the frame. Update: After starting the game perfect through the first three innings, Zimmermann found himself in a bit of trouble with one out in the fourth. Zimmermann allowed back-to-back hits to Ryan Braun and Jonathan Lucroy. Carlos Gomez then worked a walk to load the bases. That's all the Brewers were able to do in the frame, however, as Zimmermann got Aramis Ramirez to pop out and Khris Davis to strike out. Zimmermann has thrown 54 pitches, struck out seven and walked one through four innings. The Nats still lead 1-0 as the game moves to the fifth. Update II: Zimmermann found himself in trouble once again in the fifth. He allowed back-to-back singles to Mark Reynolds and Jean Segura. Two outs later, Braun singled on a ground ball to left field to score a pair of runs. The Brewers lead 2-1 at the end of five innings. Update III: Zimmermann's night is done after six innings. Nate McLouth pinch-hit for the Nats' right-hander with two outs in the seventh. Zimmermann allowed six hits, two earned runs, walked two and struck out nine. His career ERA at Miller Park is now 1.50. If the score holds, Zimmermann will get tagged with the loss. Jerry Blevins took over for Zimmermann in the seventh. Update IV: Rendon's solo blast with one out in the eighth tied the game at 2-2. Aaron Barrett took over for Blevins in the bottom of the eighth. Update V: The Nats are Brewers are headed for extra innings tied 2-2. Update VI: Ross Detwiler took over in the 10th inning and has tossed three scoreless innings. Rendon has the only Nats hit in extra innings. We're in the top of the 13th as the top of the Nats will hit. Update VII: Ryan Zimmerman's two-run homer in the 16th inning gave the Nats a 4-2 lead. Rafeal Soriano will attempt to close out the game in the bottom of the frame. The Nats' bullpen has pitched eight scoreless innings thus far. Update VIII: And that's (finally) a ballgame. The Nats have now taken two games from the first-place Brewers after a 4-2 win. Zimmerman was the star of tonight's game as he took away an extra-base hit from Brewers in the bottom of the frame.
