PHILADELPHIA - Some opportune hitting and well-placed grounders led to four runs for the Phillies in the second inning against Nationals starter Tanner Roark.
Cody Asche singled to start the frame and then Andres Blanco belted a line drive double to right. The Nationals opted to bring the infield up and Phillies starter Severino Gonzalez hit a bouncing ball to Tyler Moore, but Asche was too quick to the plate and Moore chose to take the safe out.
Odubel Herrera followed with a grounder up the middle that Danny Espinosa got to, but his long throw to Moore was late, allowing Blanco to score.
Cesar Hernandez's slow ground ball was the next to find the hole into left field advancing Herrara to third base.
Two more RBI bouncing balls from Maikel Franco and Domonic Brown extended the Phillies lead to 4-0 over the Nationals.
It took Roark 51 pitches to get through the first two innings.
Update: Yunel Escobar doubled off Severino to start the fourth and then scored on Clint Robinson's RBI single just inside the bag at third. Ian Desmond then launched his seventh home run of the season to deep center field to pull the Nats within one.
Update II: The Phillies answered in the bottom of the frame. Five more singles led to three more Phillies runs before Nationals manager Matt Williams ended Roark's evening, calling for lefty Felipe Rivero from the bullpen.
Carlos Ruiz lifted a sacrifice fly off Rivero scoring Brown for the eighth run charged to Roark.
Roark allowed eight runs on 12 hits (11 singles) with one walk and no strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings. He threw 82 pitches.
Update III: Jose Lobaton blasted a solo homer to the right field second deck at Citizens Bank Park in the sixth. It was Lobaton's third home run of the season.
Update IV: Robinson added an RBI in the seventh.
The Phillies beat the Nationals 8-5.
