Not everyone happy to see Harper in Home Run Derby

Denizens of Natstown were pleased that Bryce Harper was voted into the starting outfield at the All-Star Game, no small achievement considering No. 34 has spent so much time on the disabled list recovering from left knee bursitis, which may or may not be related to his frequent run-ins with outfield walls with varying degrees of give. And D.C. was giddy yesterday when the Mets' David Wright named the 20-year-old slugger to his squad for the July 15 Home Run Derby that precedes the Midsummer Classic. The prospect of Harper slamming baseballs deep into the Flushing night - with the accompanying "Back, back, back" calls by ESPN's Chris Berman - made Nationals fans block off Monday night for Harper homer viewing. But not everyone is thrilled to see Harper in the Home Run Derby. Tampa Bay Rays pitcher David Price took to Twitter this afternoon to criticize Harper's selection.

No Pedro Alvarez for #hrderby?? And he's from NY...Harper is unreal but with 12?! Really?? I love Bryce but Pedro deserves it!! #whatajoke

While Price cites the fact that Harper has only 12 homers because of his DL stint, there may be some collegiate alliances at play here, too. Price and Alvarez, the Pirates masher who he tweeted his preference for over Harper, are both Vanderbilt baseball alums. Guess the old gold and black of the Commodores runs deep.
