One inning does in Detwiler (Nats lose, drop a full game)

PHILADELPHIA - If you take out the third inning, Ross Detwiler had a pretty solid start. Excluding that one frame, Detwiler allowed just one run and three hits over four innings of work. The Phillies did a lot of damage in that third inning, though. Detwiler, who was a little out of sorts early on, walked the first two hitters he faced in the third, gave up an RBI single to Ryan Howard and then served up a three-run bomb to Carlos Ruiz. Four batters, four runs scored. That made it a 5-1 Phillies lead. After those four hitters, Detwiler somehow managed to settle down, and retired the next nine hitters he faced in order. He closed out the third inning by sitting down Domonic Brown, Darin Ruf and Kevin Frandsen, and then put up back-to-back 1-2-3 innings in the fourth and fifth. He was pulled after five innings of work, having thrown 84 pitches, 49 for strikes. The Nats chipped into the Phillies' lead in the fifth, getting two runs on RBI singles by Bryce Harper and Ryan Zimmerman. Those hits helped chase Cole Hamels from the game after five innings of work. It's a 6-3 game entering the seventh. Update: The Braves won in dramatic fashion on a Freddie Freeman walk-off homer in the bottom of the ninth, cutting the Nationals' division lead to 4 1/2 games. Barring a late comeback, the Nats will drop a full game to Atlanta today and will be up four games on the Braves with eight to play. Update II: That's the ballgame. The Nats fall to the Phillies 6-3 and see their division lead cut to four games. The Nats did well to knock Hamels out fairly early, but they did nothing (and I almost literally mean nothing) against the Phillies' bullpen, going 1-for-12 with five strikeouts against Philadelphia relievers.
