Postgame reactions after Nats' 11-2 loss

MIAMI - This was most certainly one of those games a team would like to just toss out the window and forget about.

The Nationals were outscored 11-2 by the Marlins tonight. They were outhit 15-2. They made two errors, giving them 15 errors through 14 games. Yup, try and forget about it and start fresh tomorrow morning.

Here are postgame reactions from the Nationals clubhouse:

Matt Williams:

On Stephen Strasburg's rough outing, in which he allowed six runs in four innings: "I don't know. They came out swinging again and they hit the fastball. So I'm thinking it's fastball command, throwing the ball where he wants to. Looked like the ball was up today. Put good swings on him, though."

On if he would like to see Strasburg throw more offspeed stuff early to keep hitters off balance: "Yeah, well, yeah. It's one thing to hit first-pitch fastballs, but it's another to throw the ball where you wanna. And I don't think he was able to do that. We'll watch the game back and see what we can come up with."

On wanting to move past this game quickly: "Yeah, of course. It's one of those. But nonetheless, it's important that we play well. Still didn't play well tonight. So that's troubling, troubling with kicking the ball around again."

On Kevin Frandsen, who grimaced in his ninth-inning at-bat: "I've got to check on him. I didn't get a chance to check on him yet. Looked like he hurt himself swinging. Not sure. We'll find out. Have information for you guys tomorrow."

On what he makes of the discussion between Ian Desmond and Jarrod Saltalamacchia that led to benches clearing: "Nothing. Just competition. The ball thrown up and in, certainly I don't think it was intentional. That's just playing the game, guys competing. And they want to win. It's part of baseball."

Ian Desmond:

On the benches-clearing incident, which came after Desmond vocalized that he didn't like the pitches up and in from Tom Koehler: "I wasn't necessarily thinking he had intentions of hitting me. You can drill me in the ribs, legs, whatever you want. But four or five times missing up around the hands and the head. ... I'm not claiming it to be on purpose, but you gotta be able to control the ball. No big deal. It wasn't intended to escalate to what it did. But it was heat of the moment. It's tough sometimes."

On if he shared his thoughts under his breath: "It definitely wasn't under my breath and it wasn't premeditated either. I meant what I was saying. This is how I feed my family. I'm not scared to get hit. I've been hit plenty of times and never said a word. Up around the hands and head, I just don't like that."

On if he was surprised Saltalamacchia reacted the way he did: "No. Of course not. I wouldn't respect him - I've known Jarrod for a long time - if he didn't. Like I said, it wasn't premeditated. It just came out. His reaction I'm sure wasn't premeditated either. This is baseball. We compete. Going forward, no hard feelings. This is the way the game goes sometimes."

Marlins catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia:

On the incident with Desmond: "Little surprised, I guess. Not sure what the issue was. Maybe he was frustrated or something. We were trying to pitch our game. Koehler was on tonight. He was throwing real well."

On what he said to Desmond: "I just said, 'Hey, man, we weren't trying to hit you. Relax.' "

Stephen Strasburg:

On the issues in his outing: "Leaving pitches up. They came out real aggressive and they didn't miss. ... (They were) jumping on me early and piled up some singles there and obviously that that homer to (Giancarlo) Stanton didn't help."

On if he's noticing a trend of hitters jumping on him early in at-bats: "They don't want me to get comfortable. That's huge. A lot of dominant pitchers with swing-and-miss stuff, that's what their approach is going to be - trying to go out there and get comfortable and get you early. I've just got to do a better job of not worrying about that and keep pounding the strike zone. I felt I had a good mindset today, it's just seemed like every pitch I threw, they hit it."

On if it's mostly pitch selection or location that's been the issue: "I think it's a combination of both. I throw hard enough that I can get away with location as long as it's down. I had some up today and they squared it up."
