Relive "Nationals Classics": History, extras, whiffs and walk-offs

That little break of warm weather we had last week - pushing 70 degrees in January? Awesome! - only makes baseball fans yearn more for pitchers and catchers to report. But the good news is that it's now less than a month before batterymates converge on The Ballpark of the Palm Beaches for Nationals spring training.

In the interim, we've got another week's worth of "Nationals Classics" on MASN, games that feature some of the best performances in curly W history.

This week, there's the usual smattering of timely homers, pitching gems and great comebacks. But there's one historic achievement that involved the Nationals that you'll likely never see repeated (well, except in repeats): the night Giants slugger Barry Bonds hit his 756th home run to break Hank Aaron's all-time record.

It was purely happenstance that the Nationals were the opposition that evening. But history shows us that the Nationals have been part of a variety of momentous moments in baseball's annals - they were the opponent Randy Johnson defeated for his 300th career victory and the team in the field when then-Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols connected for his 500th career homer, both games occurring at Nationals Park.

Just goes to prove that anything can happen at a baseball game. You never know ...

Now on to this week's "Nationals Classics" on MASN:

Monday, Jan. 16, 9 a.m. - Some people love extra innings, others dread bonus baseball. But if you're in a game that goes beyond nine innings, this much is a given: You want to win. Last April 24, it took 16 innings before the Nationals prevailed over the Twins in the getaway game of a weekend series. Chris Heisey was the hero, leading off the home half of the 16th with a solo homer to left-center.

Monday, Jan. 16, 11:30 p.m. - Dan Uggla played only one season with the Nats, and this game from April 28, 2015 was the night of perhaps his biggest hit: a three-run homer in the ninth-inning that capped a wild comeback from a 9-1 deficit in a 13-12 win over the Braves at Turner Field.

Tuesday, Jan. 17, 12:30 p.m. - Nothing beats a walk-off win, and Ryan Zimmerman's three-run blast off Brad Lidge in the ninth gave the Nats a 5-3 win over the Phillies on July 31, 2010.

Wednesday, Jan. 18, 12:30 a.m. - In this game from April 14, 2016, Bryce Harper hit a third-inning grand slam off Julio Teheran in a 6-2 win over the Braves. It was Harper's first slam and his 100th career homer, making him the eighth-youngest player to reach that plateau.

Wednesday, Jan. 18, 9 a.m. - A 6-2 Nationals triumph over the Giants was a footnote to history in this game from Aug. 7, 2007. In the fifth inning, Bonds took Mike Bacsik deep to right-center for No. 756, making him baseball's new all-time home run king. Bacsik yielded solo homers to Bonds and Benjie Molina, while Brad Schneider, Austin Kearns and Felipe Lopez went deep in Washington's win.

Sunday, Jan. 22, 3:30 p.m. - Tanner Roark was dealing in this game from April 23, 2016, fanning 15 Twins over seven innings in a 2-0 victory. Zimmerman drove in both of the Nationals runs.
