That memory of Steven Souza Jr.'s diving catch in left-center to seal Jordan Zimmermann's no-hitter on the last day of the regular season may have to last you a while. It appears Souza is on his way out of D.C. in a mutliple-player, three-team trade that also involves the Padres and Rays.
Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com is reporting that a framework is in place that would send Souza and minor league left-hander Travis Ott to the Rays, with the Nationals receiving two prospects - shortstop Trea Turner and pitcher Joe Ross - from the Padres. San Diego would receive outfielder Wil Myers (the 2013 American League Rookie of the Year), catcher Ryan Hanigan, minor league lefty Jose Castillo and minor league righty Gerardo Reyes, while the Rays would also get catcher Rene Rivera and two prospects, first baseman Jake Bauers and right-hander Burch Smith.
The deal, of course, would be pending physical examinations by the respective clubs.
Souza, 25, was the International League Most Valuable Player and Rookie of the Year after a breakout season for Triple-A Syracuse in which he hit .350/.432/.590 with 18 homers, 75 RBIs and 26 stolen bases. A third-round pick in the 2007 First-Year Player Draft, he played in 21 games for the Nats, batting .130 with two homers and two RBIs.
Just last week at the Winter Meetings in San Diego, Nationals manager Matt Williams said Souza had earned a chance to compete for a backup outfield spot in spring training. Instead, Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo will sell high on a player the organization likes but doesn't have a definitive major league role for.
Ott, 19, was a 25th-round pick in the 2013 draft. He was 1-4 with a 3.93 ERA in 13 starts between short-season Single-A Auburn and low Single-A Hagerstown in 2014.
Turner, 21, was the 13th overall pick in June out of North Carolina State. He played in 69 games between low Single-A Eugene and Single-A Fort Wayne after signing, and batted .323/.406/.448 with five homers, 24 RBIs and 23 stolen bases. Because he was drafted in June, Turner will be listed as a player to be named in the deal, but all indications are the Nationals couldn't pass up the chance to acquire the speedy shortstop.
Ross, 21, was also a first-rounder, taken with the 25th overall pick in the 2011 draft out of Bishop O'Dowd High School in Oakland, Calif. The right-hander was 10-6 with a 3.92 ERA in 23 games (22 starts) between high Single-A Lake Elsinore and Double-A San Antonio last season. He projects as a No. 2 or No. 3 starter.
