Right-hander Erik Davis joining Nationals

ATLANTA - This incredibly eventful night in Nationals land just won't end. Right-handed reliever Erik Davis, who has spent this season at Triple-A Syracuse, just tweeted that he's getting called up to the big leagues. At this late hour, I'm not confident that I'll be able to get confirmation on the particulars of the roster move, but I can tell you there were rumblings that Davis was an option to get called up earlier in the week. The two most likely candidates to land on the disabled list to make room for Davis on the Nationals' 25-man roster are Stephen Strasburg (strained right oblique) and Bryce Harper (bursitis in left knee). Not the two guys the Nationals would like to be a part of this discussion. This is just my thinking here, but I'm inclined to believe that Harper will be the guy to get moved to the DL. Manager Davey Johnson said tonight that the Nats will wait to determine what the best move is with Strasburg, and they'll want their doctors in D.C. to have a look at him before making a decision there. The bursitis in Harper's left knee hasn't cleared up much - if at all - over the last five days that he's been out of the Nats' lineup, and based on what Johnson was saying earlier today when discussing Harper, it sure sounded like a DL stint was in the 20-year-old outfielder's future. The Nationals are calling on Davis now because Craig Stammen and Tyler Clippard will likely both be unavailable tomorrow following heavy workloads in tonight's 3-2 win. Stammen threw 49 pitches over four perfect innings of work, while Clippard needed 32 pitches to get through a rocky seventh inning. Davis, 26, has posted a 3.00 ERA in 24 innings at Triple-A Syracuse this season and has been solid against left-handed hitters, holding them to a .205 batting average against. The Stanford product was acquired by the Nationals in a 2011 trade that sent infielder Alberto Gonzalez to the Padres.
