Taking a look at the remaining free agent relievers

The Nationals don't currently have a need, per se, for another reliever. Tyler Clippard has departed, going to Oakland in the trade that brought Yunel Escobar to D.C., but the Nationals could look to fill Clippard's eighth-inning role in 2015 with some combination of Aaron Barrett/Matt Thornton/Blake Treinen. All three posted strong numbers in 2014 and all three are highly thought of within the organization. But if the Nats are indeed looking to add another reliever from the free agent market, there are still options out there despite the fact that the calendar is about to turn to February. Yes, the market has been picked through pretty good and most of the remaining options are guys who are looking at minor league deals or are somewhat of a risk, as they're coming back off of injuries. But there are a few talented, proven relievers who are out there, and could add depth to a Nats bullpen that could possibly use a boost. Here are the remaining free agents (with ages), a list compiled by MLBTradeRumors.com: Right-handed Relievers Mike Adams (36) Matt Albers (32) John Axford (32) Burke Badenhop (32) Ronald Belisario (32) Jared Burton (34) Joba Chamberlain (29) Kyle Farnsworth (39) Matt Guerrier (36) Casey Janssen (33) Matt Lindstrom (35) Dustin McGowan (32) Chris Perez (29) Francisco Rodriguez (33) Rafael Soriano (35) Jose Veras (34) Brian Wilson (33) Jamey Wright (40) Left-handed Relievers Joe Beimel (38) Sean Burnett (32) Phil Coke (32) Neal Cotts (35) David Huff (30) Franklin Morales (29) Joe Thatcher (33) The Nats probably don't need a left-handed reliever, given that Thornton and Jerry Blevins are set up as pieces for 2015 and Xavier Cedeno and Matt Grace will both also be in camp, competing for jobs. But another right-handed reliever could possibly be useful. It's probably important to note that Soriano and Rodriguez are clients of Scott Boras, who as we all know has negotiated numerous deals with the Nationals, including one two winters ago for Soriano himself. Rodriguez and Janssen might be the most attractive options remaining, both of whom closed last season. We'll see whether the Nats choose to throw significant money at one of them to bolster the back of their 'pen, or stick with the group they currently have.
