#TBT to "Nationals Classics": Turner hits for cycle in win over Rockies

Despite the freezing cold and rainy temperatures in Denver on April 25th, it was easily the hottest night of Trea Turner's career. The Nationals outlasted the Rockies 15-12, but Turner stole the spotlight as he hit for the cycle, drove in a career-high seven RBIs and scored four runs.

With gametime temperature hovering around 37 degrees, donning a ski mask and warm gloves, Turner turned his fourth full game back from the disabled list into a stellar night with:

* Single in the first
* Two-run double in the second
* Two-run homer in the sixth
* Bases-loaded triple in the seventh (diving headfirst into third base to complete the cycle)

At 23 years and 300 days old, Turner became the second-youngest player to hit for the cycle and record seven or more RBIs in major league history (behind Joe DiMaggio). It was the third cycle in Nationals history, and the ninth in Nationals/Expos history.

In his postgame interview with MASN's Dan Kolko, Turner said he wasn't thinking about what he was about to accomplish:

Thursday, Nov. 30, 7 p.m. - When the Nats hosted the Padres in Washington, D.C., on July 7, 2010, first baseman Adam Dunn had been mentioned in trade rumors for weeks, but he secured his spot on the Nats roster for the remainder of the season and sealed a 7-6 win for his team after blasting three home runs for the first time in his career.

Dunn's hat trick gave him 20 total homers for his 10th straight season, and was tied for second in the National League with Albert Pujols (behind Joey Votto). At the time, Dunn and Alfonso Soriano were the only Nats players to hit three home runs in a game and it was the first three-homer performance at Nationals Park.

Friday, Dec. 1, 1:30 p.m. - Bryce Harper going yard on opening day has now become a favorite tradition in D.C., a tradition that began in 2013 on a day that the Nats kicked off the season by celebrating their 2012 NL East title.

Harper, the reigning NL Rookie of the Year, enjoyed his first major league opening day by blasting back-to-back homers off Ricky Nolasco in the Nats' 2-0 victory over the division rival Marlins. He became the fourth-youngest player to homer on opening day and the first Nationals/Expos player to homer in his first two at-bats of the season. (Spoiler alert: This season Harper notched his fifth career opening day blast to became the all-time leader for most home runs on opening day before age 25.)

That's not all, Stephen Strasburg also fired an efficient 80 pitches over seven shutout innings (retiring 19 consecutive batters), Tyler Clippard recorded a scoreless eighth inning and newly signed closer Rafael Soriano tossed a perfect 1-2-3 inning to earn his first save as a National.

Monday, Dec. 4, 7 p.m. - Although it was a tough season finale for Matt Wieters, one of the most memorable moments of his 2017 season was a tiebreaking grand slam against the Cubs on Aug. 6. Wieters connected on the first pitch he saw to give the Nats an 8-4 lead in the eighth inning. Brian Goodwin's solo shot to right field completed the 9-4 win.

Tuesday, Dec. 5, noon - April 9, 2014 became a dramatic night at Nats Park in a back-and-forth game that eventually ended in a 10-7 win for the good guys. Although it was Harper who sparked the comeback with a three-run shot into the upper deck, Jayson Werth launched the Nats past the Marlins with a go-ahead grand slam locking in the victory.

Thursday, Dec. 7, 7 p.m. - A week after this season's All-Star Game festivities came to a close, the Nats staged their own home run derby with eight homers in their 15-2 rout of the Brewers on July 27. The slugfest (including two homers each from Harper and Ryan Zimmerman) tied a franchise record, was the eighth time a team has homered back-to-back-to-back-to-back and the sixth time a team homered five times in one inning.
