Things escalate quickly on Detwiler, Nats (Nats lose 6-0)

Ross Detwiler was cruising along through 3 2/3 innings tonight. He'd allowed just two hits, had struck out three and was making quick work of a tough Brewers lineup. Then Detwiler got hit fairly hard, and it happened in a hurry. The lefty allowed three straight extra-base hits with two outs in the fourth, the middle of which was a two-run homer by Corey Hart. In the fifth, Detwiler again retired two quick outs before the Brewers brought another run across. Norichika Aoki ripped a double, stole third and came in on Carlos Gomez's RBI single to make it 3-0. That was it for Detwiler, as Davey Johnson - the self-proclaimed Captain Hook - came on to make a pitching change. He called for Craig Stammen, who promptly allowed Gomez to steal, move to third on catcher Sandy Leon's throwing error and come in on Ryan Braun's single to right. Braun then stole second (noticing a theme here?) and Aramis Ramirez crushed a Stammen slider out to left for a two-run shot that made it 6-0. Over a three-out span, the Brewers tallied six runs, knocked the Nats starter from the game and took control of this contest. Update: Boy, Mike Fiers was good tonight. The Brewers' rookie starter held the Nats scoreless over 6 1/3 innings, striking out nine, as he earned his fourth win of the season and lowered his ERA to 1.77. The final from Milwaukee was 6-0, with the Nationals being shut out for just the third time this season. Old buddy Livan Hernandez even held the Nats scoreless over 1 1/3 innings. Washington's winning streak is snapped at six games, and the Nats fall back to four games ahead of the Braves in the National League East.
