ATLANTA - Coming off Friday night's extra-inning loss to the Braves, one that was especially taxing to the Nationals bullpen, the team has made at least one roster move before tonight's contest.
Right-hander Blake Treinen is in the building and will be called up for the first time in his career. Right-hander Aaron Barrett will be optioned, but said the Nats told him they hope to bring him back up in about 10 days - the minimum time required before recalling a player after he's sent down barring emergency circumstances.
Also, outfielder Steven Souza Jr. is listed on the lineup card while Denard Span is not. Span appeared to be shaken up when he collided with Braves second baseman Dan Uggla between first and second late in Friday night's game. Souza is not yet in the clubhouse, but it appears he could be taking Span's spot if the center fielder needs to be placed on the disabled list.
Treinen, 25, opened some eyes this spring and got the call between 11:30 p.m. and midnight last night.
"Internally, I was screaming," he said.
Treinen had made one start for Triple-A Syracuse, allowing two unearned runs in five innings. The move was necessitated by the Nats needing five relievers to cover five innings after Tanner Roark lasted 4 2/3 innings last night. That came just two nights after Jordan Zimmermann was pulled after 1 2/3 innings requiring the Nats to use five relievers to handle the last 7 1/3 innings.
This would also mark the first call-up for Souza, 24, who was ranked the Nats' 10th-best prospect by Baseball America. He was batting .273 with two homers and seven RBIs in seven games for Syracuse.
Update: The Nationals placed Span on the seven-day disabled list with a concussion. To replace Span on the roster, the club selected the contract of Souza.
Additionally, the Nats optioned Barrett to Triple-A Syracuse and recalled Treinen.
Infielder/outfielder Jeff Kobernus was placed on the 60-day disabled list with a left hand fracture.
