The Nationals were a strike away from putting an end to their two-game funk and giving Stephen Strasburg his third win of the season.
Instead, we keep playing.
Rafael Soriano blew his third save of the season, and second in as many chances, with Gregor Blanco's RBI triple with two outs in the bottom of the ninth plating Andres Torres and knotting this game, 2-2.
Soriano left a two-strike pitch a little up and over the middle of the plate, and Blanco - the former Syracuse Chief - struck it well out to right field. Bryce Harper appeared to be tracking the ball well, but as he got to the warning track, he jumped and seemed to be bracing for the wall, even though the wall was still a good eight feet away.
Harper might not have been able to make the play, but he pulled his arm back and never made a full leap, and the ball went over his head.
You have to wonder if Harper's multiple wall collisions over the last few weeks - especially the one in Los Angeles - came into his mind as he saw that ball continue to carry.
Soriano bounced back to retire Brett Pill to end the inning and keep the game tied, but this one will sting a bit for the time being.
The Nats were so close to a big win, and now they'll need to get the offense going again after notching just two hits over the last eight innings.
Update: Making his first big league appearance since July 2011, Yunesky Maya served up a two-run, walk-off homer to Pablo Sandoval, and the Nationals dropped a tough one to the Giants, 4-2.
The only out Maya notched after coming on to work the bottom of the 10th was a fly ball to center that traveled about 395 feet. He then gave up a single to Marco Scutaro and Sandoval absolutely obliterated an 85 mph changeup that stayed over the middle of the plate.
The Nats now fall to 23-23 on the season, and the best they can hope for on this road trip is a 4-6 record.
They picked up just two hits in their last nine innings tonight, saw Soriano blow his second save in as many tries and now are sitting at .500 on May 22.
