Werth's streak reaching base reaches MLB-best 37 games

It doesn't receive the fanfare a hitting streak does, but Jayson Werth's streak of consecutive games reaching base deserves some attention.

Especially now that the Nationals veteran has reached base in more consecutive games than any other major leaguer this season.

With a fifth-inning walk during Saturday night's loss to the Giants, Werth kept the streak alive. He has now reached base in 37 straight games, topping Miami's Marcell Ozuna for the longest such streak in baseball in 2016.

Werth's streak began June 20 at Dodger Stadium, when he went 1-for-4 with an opposite-field single off Clayton Kershaw. He has failed to record a hit in 11 of the subsequent 37 games, relying instead on walks to get the job done, but overall he has been quite productive during this stretch.

Werth is hitting just .254 during the streak, but his on-base percentage is .377.

This is the second-longest reaching base streak in Nationals history, trailing only Ryan Zimmerman's 43-game run in April-May 2009, which was remembered more for his 30-game hitting streak sandwiched in the middle.
