Williams on Nats' sweep-clinching 9-1 loss to A's

Nationals manager Matt Williams covered Gio Gonzalez's struggles, the dugout incident and other shortfalls he saw in Sunday's 9-1 loss to the A's, as well as the sweep as a whole. Here are some selections from Williams' postgame media session. On whether he had anything special to say to the team after being swept: "No. We got manhandled today. Last night, we had a chance to win one and that didn't happen. Three more tough games on this road trip, so we've got to regroup and play well tomorrow starting tomorrow." On Gonzalez's rough start: "It seemed like he was 2-0 on everybody. Just behind in the count. (Derek) Norris hit a couple of late 3-0 fastballs out of the ballpark. It happens. He fell behind a lot today and had to throw the ball over the plate." On whether Gonzalez facing his former team riled him up: "I don't think so. He just missed. Again, he didn't have a breaking ball early, missed with his fastball and they made him pay for it. So that's kind of the story of today." On Gonzalez's dugout incident with a teammate: "Sometimes within the confines of a team, they're all competing out there. So it's just competition and we're not going to go any further than that with it. That's the team's business and for nobody else. But everybody wants to do well and everybody wants to win, so we'll hopefully start that tomorrow." On whether things like that happen over the course of 162 games: "Yeah, sure. And it's frustrating. He's frustrated. We're all frustrated at this point, but we have no choice tomorrow but to show up and play at 6:40. So that's what we'll have to do - come out with energy, be ready to go." On whether any plays bugged him, especially the missed pop fly in the second: "I played here a long time in this area, and this is the highest sky and toughest sky there is in all of baseball. So yeah, could it have been a catch? Potentially. But from Gio's perspective, he didn't throw enough strikes and from our offensive perspective, we didn't get enough hits, and that's the bottom line of the game. So regardless of play or a ball falling in or not, that's not my concern. My concern is us tomorrow and going on from there." On whether he's concerned about the offense: "No, I'm not concerned. I'm not concerned with anything at this point. This was a tough series against a very good team, and a couple of early deficits and a ballgame last night that we could've won against arguably their best guy. So am I concerned? No. We need to do a better job all-around, but I'm not concerned at this point."
