Winter Meetings: Dusty Baker headlines Day 2 of Winter Meetings

NASHVILLE - I've never been so happy to be so busy than I was today - so I didn't have to think about last night's Redskins game. But I didn't have to find any of my colleagues today, so that counts as a win.

The day started with reports breaking that the Nationals were signing free agent right-handed reliever Shawn Kelley, who joins lefty Oliver Perez in general manager Mike Rizzo's revamping bullpen. Rizzo would say later in the day that no deal was done, but the Nats are in communication with Kelley and still interested in signing him.

Even with the reports on Kelley, the Nats are losing out on signing players who were on their radar. Darren O'Day re-signed with the Orioles last night, Aroldis Chapman was supposedly traded to the Dodgers (until a domestic abuse allegation put the deal on hold) and the Cubs swooped in at the last minute to sign Ben Zobrist.

So now who do the Nationals turn to if they want to make a splash this week?

Today did mark the first time we heard from new Nats manager Dusty Baker, and it was great. His charisma can be infectious and his personality will fit perfectly in D.C. My favorite quote from the skipper today came when he was asked if he was uncomfortable competing against the Mets as a division opponent. Baker replied, "Hopefully, they don't feel comfortable about competing against me."

Boom. That's what you love to hear from the leader of your ballclub about facing the defending division and league champs. You can watch Baker's entire meeting with the media that I shot here.

I also shot a recap of the day with my boys Chris Johnson and Pete Kerzel, which can be found below.

Meanwhile, instead of me having to worry about one of my colleagues, one of them was worrying about me.

It was actually more about what I was eating instead of how much I was eating. Let's just say I probably won't have another salad while I'm here. In fact, I'm about to go grab some barbeque at the Jack Daniel's restaurant while hopefully watching the Maryland men's basketball game.

Update: The Terps won and the pulled pork platter was delicious.
