Zimmermann pounding the zone, Harper homers (updated)

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - Bryce Harper put the Nationals on the board just three batters into tonight's game at Champion Stadium, smacking an opposite-field home run off Braves starter Julio Teheran. The wind is blowing out to left here tonight, and a ball that looked like it might come down feet short of the fence ended up landing on the berm just beyond the wall. It's Harper's first home run of spring and makes him 7-for-11 on the Grapefruit League season. The reigning National League Rookie of the Year has two doubles to go along with his homer. I have a feeling a monster year is upcoming. Jordan Zimmermann has allowed two runs through three innings, with a solo homer by Jason Heyward and a Reed Johnson RBI single doing the damage. Zimmermann has really been pounding the strike zone, throwing 39 of his 49 pitches for strikes. The righty has four strikeouts on the night, including two of B.J. Upton - one to end the first inning and one to end the third. The second punchout of Upton came on three pitches. Zimmermann got Upton swinging at a slider for strike two and then blew a fastball by him for a swinging strike three. Zimmermann has sat at 91-93 mph on the stadium gun and topped out at 95 mph. He's thrown a handful of changeups, a pitch he's trying to develop this spring, with mixed results. Ross Ohlendorf is warming in the Nationals' bullpen and will probably come in for the fourth inning with the Nationals trailing 2-1. Update: Ohlendorf is indeed on to work the fourth.
