A blown lead and second guessing Wieters

Well, it's official. The Orioles have now lost more games when leading after eight innings in just 67 games this year then they did in all 162 games last year. They are 14-5 this season when leading after eight in blowing tonight's 2-1 lead heading to the last of the ninth. Last year, they were 55-4 when leading after eight. The Orioles have the worst save percentage in the AL now at 47.8 percent. They have saved 11 games in 23 chances. Only four teams in the league are under 68 percent. Cleveland is next worst at 58.8. I will second guess a Matt Wieters decision tonight that contributed to the loss. After San Diego loaded the bases with no outs in that last of the ninth, David Hernandez struck out Nick Hundley and that brought David Eckstein up. Hernandez got ahead of him 0-2 on fastballs. I was looking for him to bust the little guy inside and overpower him. But Wieters called for a pitch outside and Eckstein pushed a game-tying single into right field. It's a small thing but why not bust him in and overpower a smaller player. Make him try to turn on a mid to upper 90's fastball which would have been much tougher for him to do. In the end maybe Hernandez would not have been able to put the ball there if asked to do so, but I would have liked to take my chances. Watching the TV, I said to myself, don't throw anything other than the heat David, I don't think he can catch up to it. But he got one where he could get some bat on it. In the end, the biggest reason they lost again was a lack of runs and the Orioles are now 2-40 when scoring three runs or less. Brian Matusz pitched another good game with nothing to show for it. His ERA is now 2.39 over his last four games but he is winless over his last 11 starts. The beat and the beatings goes on.
