A few notes on one stunning inning and the O's 19th comeback win of 2023

Start spreading the news – the Orioles scored eight runs in the seventh inning to stun the Yankees in the Bronx. The night before they had a 4-0 lead and lost. On this night they trailed by four in the seventh and won.

The eight-run inning was their most in any inning this year, topping the seven in the seventh on May 5 at Atlanta. It is their most in an inning since scoring nine in the eighth inning on Sept, 8, 2021 versus Kansas City. And this was their most runs in any inning in a road game since scoring nine in the seventh inning on April 4, 2016, at Texas.

According to Elias, the Sports Bureau, not the executive vice president, this was tied for the most runs scored in a single inning at the current or original Yankee Stadium in Baltimore team history. They also got eight in the third inning on June 5, 1989.

At 32-17, the Orioles remain three games behind Tampa Bay for the AL East lead, but they also moved back to three games ahead of the Yankees for second in the division.

The Orioles are now 4-12 when trailing after six innings.

Adam Frazier seems to get a big hit nightly and the one on this night was very big. He drilled a three-run shot off the right field foul pole to cut the 5-1 deficit to 5-4 and ignite the big inning. Last year Frazier hit three homers all year in 602 plate appearances. He hit No. 6 last night in his 169^th PA.

That blast extended his season-high on-base streak to 17 games, matching the longest on-base streak of his career. He has hit safely in seven consecutive games, batting .407 (11-for-27) with five runs, two homers and seven RBIs during that span and Frazier has hit safely in 10 of his last 11 games and 11 of his last 13.

Gunnar Henderson’s huge two-run, pinch-hit double to right, hit 100 mph off the bat, provided a 6-5 lead for the Orioles. He recorded his first career hit and RBIs as a pinch hitter. Henderson has hit safely in nine of his last 11 games, batting .306/.324/.611 (11-for-36) with six runs, three doubles, two homers and four RBIs over that span.

The Orioles have scored 14 runs this series and scored five or more in each game of this AL East road trip, with 34 runs in five games. By the way, they have a winning road trip wrapped up at 4-1 and can win back-to-back road series at Toronto and New York with a win tonight. If they do win tonight, they will have recent series wins over both the Rays and Yankees where they lost the first game.

The Birds are hitting the long ball with more frequency now and have hit two or more in seven of the last nine games with 17 total in that stretch.

The O’s bullpen has allowed two earned runs in 8 2/3 innings this series. The ‘pen ERA for the year is 2.98, second best in the majors to the Yankees at 2.94.

So, the O’s 19^th comeback win of the year – which leads the majors – was built against a lefty in Nestor Cortes that had a career 1.37 ERA against them and a bullpen that leads the majors in ERA.

On the farm Wednesday: In a day game yesterday, Triple-A Norfolk won again and moved 20 games over the .500 mark. The Tides rolled out to an early 9-1 lead in the fourth inning and held off a Memphis rally to win 9-7. Norfolk is 33-13 and is 11-5 over its last 16 games and is now 14-6 this month.

Lewin Diaz went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer and three RBIs while Connor Norby was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. In the morning yesterday the O’s signed 26-year-old infielder Joseph Rosa to a minor league contract and then he went out and was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI in his first Norfolk game.

On the mound, lefty Cole Irvin went five innings allowing two hits and two runs to improve to 5-1 with a 3.25 ERA after a 65-pitch outing. Over his last four games, Irvin has a 2.16 ERA and 0.80 WHIP. In relief, Spenser Watkins allowed four runs over 2 1/3 while lefty Nick Vespi got the last three outs for his fifth save. Lefty Drew Rom (4-2, 3.40 ERA) gets the start for Norfolk tonight.

Double-A Bowie blanked Akron 9-0 on a combined shutout by right-handers Garret Stallings and Peter Van Loon. Stallings allowed five hits and fanned seven in five innings to get the win and Van Loon allowed just one hit in four scoreless to record his first save.

On offense, Coby Mayo went 3-for-5 with a two-run homer, his sixth and four RBIs. He’s batting .279 with a .911 OPS. Heston Kjerstad went 3-for-5 with three runs and an RBI and is batting .324/1.031. Bowie is 14-25.

High-A Aberdeen split a doubleheader with Jersey Shore and is 19-21. Shortstop Jackson Holliday had three hits and scored three runs in the first game while going 0-for-1 with two walks in the nightcap. He is now batting .405 with an OPS of 1.238 for the IronBirds.

Low Single-A Delmarva beat Lynchburg 5-3 as Creed Willems had an RBI double and two-run homer, No. 8 and drove in three. He is batting .322 with an OPS of 1.121. Samuel Basallo added an RBI double and is batting .305. Right-hander Bradley Brehmer got the start and gave up just one run and three hits over 5 2/3 innings. Winning pitcher Hugo Beltran threw two scoreless and is 1-0 with a 2.30 ERA.
