A few notes on the offense after a breakout game at Oakland

When the Orioles scored three runs in the fourth inning today, they matched their total from the first three games in Oakland.

In the fifth inning, they topped that on one swing.

Mark Trumbo hit a fifth-inning grand slam and drove in five, while Pedro Alvarez added three RBIs, as the Orioles beat Oakland 9-6 to salvage the finale of the four-game series. They had scored three runs or fewer in three straight, six of eight, 11 of 16 and in 16 of 26 games since the All-Star break. But, the offense broke out today in Oakland.

The Orioles improved to 64-50 and ended a 12-game road losing streak against American League West teams. They are 3-4 on a road trip that now heads to San Francisco for a three-game series.

Trumbo's five-RBI day matched his season-high from April 15 at Texas. The slam was his 32nd homer of the year and traveled 411 feet to left-center off lefty Daniel Coulombe.

In the fourth, Trumbo singled in the first run and Alvarez came up with a two-run double for a 3-0 lead. The slam in the fifth made it 7-0. Ahead 7-2 after Ryon Healy's two-run shot in the fifth, the O's scored twice in the seventh. Adam Jones hit his 23rd homer on an 0-2 pitch and Alvarez plated another run with a single.

Oakland closed the gap by scoring four times in the eighth off Logan Ondrusek and Darren O'Day. Zach Britton completed the ninth to go 35-for-35 in save chances. He pitched out of a bases-loaded jam that saw Oakland bring the potential winning run to the plate.

More notes on the offense:

* The runs in the fourth inning snapped a 17-inning scoreless streak for the Orioles. They had scored just three runs in their previous 36 innings since taking a 10-0 lead in the third Sunday at Chicago.

* This was Trumbo's third career slam, first as an Oriole and his first since Sept. 15, 2014 off San Francisco's Ryan Vogelsong.

* It is the O's fifth slam of the season. The others: Manny Machado on April 28 against the White Sox and May 8 versus the A's, Jonathan Schoop on May 14 versus Detroit and Chris Davis on June 26 against Tampa Bay.

* Trumbo began the day 0-for-13 and 7-for-61 (.115) his last 16 games. He was batting .158 since the All-Star break and had homered just once in the last 16 games.

* In their three wins on this road trip, the Orioles have scored 26 runs, while they have scored five run in the four losses.

* In the first three games of the Oakland series, the Orioles scored three runs on 17 hits with two homers and went 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position. Today, they went 11-for-37 with two homers and went 4-for-11 with RISP.

Chris Tillman, in his fourth crack at his 15th win, got it this afternoon. Tillman went seven innings, allowing two runs on five hits. With his first win since July 21, Tillman is 15-4 with an ERA of 3.46. The Orioles are 20-5 when he starts this season. This is the sixth time this year Tillman has been the winning pitcher to stop an O's losing streak of three or more games.

This was the Orioles' seventh consecutive quality start, extending their best run of the year. The rotation's ERA is 2.93 in that span.

The Orioles are 13-3 in their last 16 day games. They improved to 11-19 versus the AL West this year with this victory, and to 4-14 on the road against those teams.

Now, it's on to San Francisco, where on Friday night, right-hander Dylan Bundy (5-3, 3.05 ERA) pitches against fellow righty Matt Cain (4-6, 5.16 ERA).
