A look at O's Dominican Summer League teams and other DSL notes

A new season is under way in the Dominican Summer League. The short-season league, which plays games through Aug. 24, began June 1. For the first time since 2010, the Orioles have two teams in the DSL. Their DSL-1 team is managed by Elvis Morel and will play 70 games. Their DSL-2 team is managed by the club's director of Dominican Republic operations, Nelson Norman, and will play 72 games. Both O's teams are 2-1 so far. The O's single entry in the league went 34-36 last season after making the playoffs in 2011, going 46-24. Four organizations - the Yankees, Mets, Cubs and Pirates - fielded two teams in the DSL in 2012. This season, the four organizations with two teams are the Orioles, Yankees, Mets and Pirates. Under Dan Duquette, the Orioles are looking to upgrade their international efforts. In this interview during spring training, Duquette told me about plans to upgrade the club's efforts in Latin America.
