For six players from the Orioles minor leagues, their time in the Arizona Fall League is almost over. They've played for the Peoria Javelinas, who are 12-12 with three games left and cannot finish in first place.
But the six have gained valuable high-level experience. Orioles director of player development Brian Graham was recently in Arizona and I asked him about the O's prospects out there.
Adrian Marin is a 21-year-old infielder who was the Single-A Frederick Keys' shortstop the past two years and a third-round pick in 2012. Over 18 games and 71 at-bats in the AFL, Marin has hit .296/.359/.380 with four doubles, 14 runs and five RBIs. Batting mostly leadoff, he had a four-game run where he went 9-for-18.
Graham on Marin: "Marin put some real good at-bats together and showed the ability to bunt well. He had several bunt base hits. He just had quality at-bats. His offensive approach was better in the fall league then it was in the Carolina League. He played well at third, short and second base also. He was not one of their starting players, but the manager put him out there a lot. He's still a shortstop for the Orioles, but he showed he can play second and third at a high level. That makes his stock rise."
Outfielder Mike Yastrzemski has not put up the numbers in Arizona as he did when he hit .406 for Double-A Bowie on its way to the Eastern League championship. The 25-year-old Yastrzemski has played in 16 games with 53 at-bats for Peoria. He has hit .208/.343/.302 with two doubles, a homer, 11 walks and eight RBIs. He is batting .333 (7-for-21) over the last six games.
Graham on Yastrzemski: "Yaz competed. I'm sure his average is not what he wanted, but he saw pitchers throwing 95 to 100 (mph) and he did a god job. He played solid defense and ran the bases well, too."
Young catcher Chance Sisco, the Orioles' second-round pick in 2013, has played in 14 AFL games with 49 at-bats. The 20-year-old Sisco is batting .245/.302/.327 with four doubles and three RBIs. He is 10-for-30 since batting just .105 through six games. Sisco gained experience catching pitchers from other organizations and having to become a quick study of those hurlers.
Graham on Sisco: "Chance is getting better defensively and he also put some good at-bats together. He showed he could compete at that level. Marin and Sisco played the majority of the year at Frederick, so for them to go out and compete in the fall league is pretty good. There were times he was really good throwing the ball (to throw runners out)."
Orioles Rule 5 right-hander Jason Garcia has made six starts in Arizona. Garcia, who will turn 23 on Saturday, had an ERA of 2.81 over the last two months for the Orioles. He is 0-1 with a 4.11 ERA in the AFL. Over 15 1/3 innings, he has allowed just seven hits with 15 walks and 19 strikeouts. Left-handed batters are just 1-for-24 (.042) off him and right-handed batters are 6-for-29 (207).
Graham on Garcia: "Jason Garcia was good. He threw the ball well and his fastball velocity was good, while his slider and changeup are getting better. He was 92 to 95 (mph). It was about getting experience for him, as he missed a large part of the season. He pitched against some good competition and I think he learned he could pitch with his fastball out there."
Left-hander Donnie Hart was an O's 27th-round pick in 2013 out of Texas State. A sidearm pitcher who throws 88 to 90 mph, he has pitched in eight AFL games, going 1-0 with a 4.82 ERA. Hart has pitched 9 1/3 innings, allowing 16 hits with two walks and 13 strikeouts. Lefties have hit .250 off him and right-handed batters .429.
Graham on Hart: "He did a nice job. He threw strikes with three pitches - fastball, slider, changeup. He was very effective against left-handed hitters and he pitched against a level of competition he hasn't pitched against before."
Tanner Scott, a 21-year-old left-hander who had never pitched above Single-A Delmarva, has done well in the AFL. Scott has garnered attention for his fastball, which touched 100 mph in the AFL and 101 mph at instructional league. In seven games, he is 0-1 with a 2.25 ERA. Over eight innings, he has allowed six hits with five walks and nine strikeouts. He has thrown five consecutive scoreless appearances, allowing just two hits over 6 1/3 innings with eight strikeouts. A sixth-round pick in 2014, Scott fanned 60 with 22 walks this year over 42 1/3 innings between Delmarva and short-season Single-A Aberdeen.
Graham on Scott: "He did really well, showing very good velocity and the ability to repeat his delivery more consistently than he had during the season. He got hitters out with fastball velocity and he threw some sliders for strikes, too. The slider made nice strides out there. The best thing Scott got out of that was experience and maturity. Understanding he can pitch at that level and being around older pitchers, some that have pitched in the big leagues, was a great learning experience for Tanner Scott."
The Orioles had two of their minor league pitching coaches in Arizona to watch their pitchers. Bowie's Alan Mills and Aberdeen's Justin Lord both spent several weeks in Arizona with the O's players.
